CHAPTER FOURTEEN
IT WASN’T THE MOST romantic place to bring a woman, Braden admitted. But he wasn’t trying to seduce her. All he wanted to do was offer her comfort. Reassure her. God willing, to help restore some of her shattered faith.
He scooted in next to her.
Normally, he wouldn’t dare intrude on someone else’s private space, and that’s exactly what the car was—a sort of private residence for the hauler’s device. But they were between drivers right now and the space was deserted.
No one would think to look for them here. Not even Elizabeth. Of course, his PR rep could still reach him via the walkie-talkie feature on his phone, but he didn’t expect to be in touch with her anytime soon. She’d offer Melanie Murray a convenient excuse and then leave him alone for a while. Elizabeth knew the drill. And the rain would last for hours, or so he’d been told. He wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t end up racing tomorrow.
“Braden, are you sure this is okay?” She slid as far away from him as possible on the passenger seat. Braden tried not to feel offended.
“It’s okay.” He slipped the keys into the ignition. It’d been a while since he’d started up one of the haulers. “There we go,” he said once the engine roared to life. “Let’s see if I can figure out how to turn the heat on.”
When he glanced right, he caught the expression on her face in the reflection of the passenger-side mirror. She looked so close to tears, his heart ached for her—actually ached—like a physical pain.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he said, patting her hand. “Everthing’s going to be okay.”
“I’m not so sure,” she murmured.
“Was it the interview? Did she say something in there to upset you?”
“No,” she said. “Not really. Everything I told her, I could have kept to myself.”
And Braden knew then that the focus of the interview had been her ex. That’s what had her looking so upset. And scared. It had nothing to do with being alone with him.
“Are you afraid he’ll come after you?”
She looked at him in surprise.
“I assume you discussed what happened between you and Stewart.”
“We did,” she said, looking away. He couldn’t help but think her profile was truly lovely. She had a face any actress would envy. Not that it was perfect. Her nose had a tiny bump near the bridge. Her chin was perhaps a little too sharp, but all her features blended together to form a face that was truly extraordinary.
“I won’t let him hurt you.”
“I know,” she said.
He wanted to touch her, but didn’t dare. If he did, he was afraid she’d fly away like a startled butterfly.
“Honestly, Dana. I’ll hire you round-the-clock security if I have to. I won’t let him harm a hair on your head.”
She sniffed. Braden realized then that she was crying.
“I just want to run away.” She tipped her head back with a moan. “And that’s so silly because I’m a grown woman and I have no reason to be afraid.
